Payroll Specialist Graduate Program

Become a Payroll Specialist

Trillium College’s Payroll Specialist graduate diploma program is perfect for anyone that already possesses a post-secondary diploma or degree or for someone that is working in the field and would like to specialize in payroll to apply for a new position at work. The specialization provides focus on accounting principles and practices specific to the Canadian marketplace. Upon completion, you will be prepared to become a nationally recognized Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) with the Canadian Payroll Association (CPA).

Areas of Focus

This program covers information in the following subject areas:

Essentials of accounting and different forms of business organizations
Accounting for merchandising
An understanding about the various government agencies and legislation that impact payroll, both from an employer and an employee’s standpoint
How to produce payroll at an employee level, keeping in compliance with legislation
Calculate and report government and third party remittances, year-end requirements and accounting for payroll at the compliance level for the organization

Employment Opportunities

Main Duties

Maintain records of employee attendance, leave and overtime to calculate pay and benefit entitlements, in Canadian and other currencies, using manual or computerized systems
Prepare and verify statements of earnings for employees, indicating gross and net salaries and deductions such as taxes, union dues, garnishments and insurance and pension plans
Prepare employee payments and benefit payments by cheque or electronic transfer
Complete, verify and process forms and documentation for administration of benefits such as pension plans, leaves, share savings, employment and medical insurance
Prepare T4 statements and other statements
Provide information to employees on payroll matters, benefit plans and collective agreement provisions
Compile statistical reports, statements, and summaries related to pay and benefits accounts
Prepare and balance period-end reports and reconcile issued payrolls to bank statements

Out of Province Student Loans

Students from provinces outside of Ontario may also qualify for funding from the last province in which they resided for 12 consecutive months. For a list of provincial offices, please visit canlearn.ca website.

Employment Ontario

Second Careers is administered by the Ontario Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (ASED) which helps laid-off workers re- train for a new career. If you were laid off any time after January 1, 2005 you are eligible to apply; including those who have taken an interim job to make ends meet. If you qualify, funding is available to support the cost of tuition, books, daycare, transportation and a basic living allowance.

Lifelong Learning Plan (RRSP)

The Lifelong Leaning Plan (LLP) allows you to withdraw money from your RRSPs to finance your education or that of your spouse or common-law partner. You can withdraw up to $10,000 per year, up to a total maximum of $20,000.

Registered Education Savings Plans

A student who is named under a family’s Registered Education Savings Plan may use these funds to cover the costs of education at an eligible post-secondary institution such as Trillium College.

Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB)

If you are a WSIB recipient or a surviving spouse, WSIB has funding resources for labour market re-entry. Speak to your case manager about re-training, which will help prepare you to get back into the work force.

Aboriginal/First Nations

If you are a registered Status Indian or Inuit (residing on or off the reserve) and plan on going back to school, you may be eligible for funding for your post-secondary studies if you register with an eligible educational institution such as Trillium College.
